I grew up in the Hudson Valley, and most of what I make still comes back to it: the river, the ridges, and the people who show up for their towns. I'm a photographer, filmmaker and writer, and the thread running through all of it is simple. Nature, community, and the spirit that moves between them. I'm interested in how we relate to the land and to each other, and what happens when we slow down enough to notice. Some of that work is close to home. I've spent years making photos and films with Scenic Hudson, with Community Matters 2 in Poughkeepsie, and as a storyteller for Mayor Yvonne Flowers. I've documented my friend Chev Dixon (Naked and Afraid, seasons 16 and 18; the Hudson Valley Challenge) on his human-powered journeys along the Hudson. I also photograph historic and luxury estates across the Northeast, both publicly and privately. Some of it has taken me further: shadow puppeteers in Java, pilgrims at the Kumbh Mela, rivers and temples in South India and Bali. My work has appeared in Anthony Bourdain's Explore Parts Unknown, The Jakarta Post, The Wall Street Journal and Hudson Valley Magazine. Along the way I've been lucky to learn directly from many, including John Stanmeyer. He taught me to see what busy eyes miss: the small things that make a scene, and the patience to let a frame unfold on its own instead of forcing it. Mostly he taught me how little of this has to do with the camera, and how much has to do with how you bring yourself to the moment and pay attention. You take nothing. We don't shoot or capture; we photograph, present in time with the people we share it with. You give to a scene, and every moment is sacred. What I bring is my own.
